How to Transfer a .ES Domain Name
Transferring a Spanish .es domain name from one registrar to another is slightly different from transferring extensions such as .com, .net or .org.
The .es domain registry is operated by Red.es / Dominios.es and the transfer requires both an AuthCode and approval from the domain's Administrative Contact.
What is required to transfer a .ES domain?
Before starting the transfer, you will normally need the following:
- The AuthCode from the current registrar.
The existing registrar must provide the domain's transfer authorisation code, sometimes referred to as an AuthCode, AUTH code or EPP code. - Access to the Administrative Contact email address.
The person listed as the Administrative Contact for the domain must be able to receive and approve the transfer email sent by Red.es. - The domain must be eligible for transfer.
A domain that has been blocked at registry level cannot be transferred. If your registrar shows the domain as locked or transfer-protected, the lock should be removed before requesting the AuthCode or beginning the transfer.
The .ES Transfer Process
Step 1 β Request the AuthCode
Contact your existing domain registrar and request the AuthCode for the .es domain.
Under the current Red.es transfer procedure, the AuthCode is required before the new registrar can submit the transfer request.
Step 2 β Request the Transfer with the New Registrar
The new receiving registrar submits a transfer request for the domain and provides the correct AuthCode to Red.es.
Providing the AuthCode does not complete the transfer. The transfer still needs to be authorised by the Administrative Contact.
Step 3 β Red.es Sends an Approval Email
Once the transfer request and AuthCode have been accepted, Red.es sends an email directly to the Administrative Contact registered against the domain.
The email will normally come from:
The message normally contains options to accept or reject the transfer.
Step 4 β Approve the Transfer
The Administrative Contact must follow the link in the Red.es email and approve the transfer.
If the transfer is approved, it will normally complete relatively quickly and the domain will then appear under the management of the new registrar.
If the request is neither accepted nor rejected, Red.es will automatically cancel the transfer request after 10 days.
Will My Website or Email Stop Working?
A registrar transfer does not normally change the domain's existing nameservers. In most cases, the nameservers assigned to the domain remain in place when the domain is transferred.
This means that transferring the registrar should not, by itself, cause your website or email service to stop working.
If the domain was using DNS or nameserver services supplied specifically by the old registrar, additional DNS changes may be required after the transfer.
Does a .ES Transfer Renew the Domain?
Unlike many generic extensions such as .com, a normal .es registrar transfer does not automatically add an additional year to the domain's registration period.
The existing expiry date normally remains unchanged following the transfer.
For this reason, registrar-to-registrar transfers of .es domains are commonly provided free of charge. However, individual registrars may have their own pricing or administrative policies.
Does Transferring a Domain Change its Owner?
No. A registrar transfer changes the company responsible for managing the domain. It does not automatically change the legal holder or owner of the domain.
Changing the holder of a .es domain is a separate procedure known as a domain transmission and is handled separately through the .es registry.
Common Reasons a .ES Transfer Fails
- The AuthCode is incorrect.
- The AuthCode has expired.
- The domain is blocked at registry level.
- The transfer approval email has gone into Spam or Junk.
- The Administrative Contact email address is no longer accessible.
- The Administrative Contact does not approve the request within the required period.
- The transfer request is rejected by the Administrative Contact.
Before Requesting a .ES Transfer
We recommend checking the following before starting:
- You have obtained a current AuthCode from the existing registrar.
- You know which email address is registered as the Administrative Contact.
- You have access to that email account.
- The domain is not blocked from transfer.
- You have recorded the existing nameservers.
- You have checked the domain's expiry date.
For a .es transfer, obtain the AuthCode from the existing registrar, request the transfer through the new registrar, and then make sure the Administrative Contact approves the Red.es email. Until that final approval has taken place, the transfer is not complete.
